Have you ever been a member of a book club? How did your group choose (or, if you haven’t been, what do you think is the best way to choose) the next book and who would lead discussion?

I have only participated in one book club and that was while I was in college working on an Associates Degree. The books for the club were predetermined by the professor and were all related to cloning. I feel that the books chosen fit the topic well and allowed all club members to debate the items presented to us.

Do you feel more or less likely to appreciate books if you are obliged to read them for book groups rather than choosing them of your own free will? Does knowing they are going to be read as part of a group affect the reading experience?

Of course I prefer to be able to choose the book(s) that I am reading. I don't appreciate being forced to read a book, and I don't see being obligated to read a book to be the same as being forced to read the book. Knowing the books are going to be read as part of a group does not affect the reading experience. My reading experience is based on the actual book and not the situation/people surrounding it.

  1. I agree. I don't like being forced to finish a book that I don't like either.

  2. I don't finish any book I'm not enjoying, or that I think is bad. So being obliged to read something for a club would drive me to distraction!
